My work throughout junior to senior year has followed a similar theme of expressionism or German Expressionism. My theme throughout most of my work was tied to express my ideas, views, and experiences. Most of my works were 2D based artworks, such as paintings or prints. I also made works that dealt with digital work, such as digital collages. Lastly I also made 3D forms of works such as sculptures. 2D based work was created more often because those were my preferred median because these works were hands on, true creations I felt good about and had lots of fun creating. The main theme once again was Expressionism. Most of my inspirations were German expressionism artists. Why German expressionism? I decided to go with German expressionism inspirations mainly because of seeing German expressionism artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's work. His work was full of color, simple shape and line. Kirchner inspired most of my work as his use of color was what really attracted me to his work. He really knew how to give his work strong meaning through his color use. He depicted work of the streets of Berlin during World War One, where he painted what he saw, emotion, feeling and experiences and expressed this through color and simple shape, etc.
My work consisted mainly of 2D works where German expressionism artists were my inspirations. Some works that I truly felt followed German expressionism and Kirchner to the fullest extent were my Self Portrait, my digital collage,”Change,” and my dry-point piece, “Observer.” My Self Portrait was inspired by one of Kirchner's Self Portraits where he uses many colors in that Self Portrait. For my Self Portrait I use mainly similar colors as Kirchner does in his. I use a variety of blues, greens, reds, oranges, blacks, etc, I also have a variety of blends in my piece. My digital collage,”Change,” is simple, it holds simple shapes but what I really liked about this piece was not only the variety of color but the meaning it holds. Just like Kirchner pieces they hold lots of color but which hold meaning. “Change,” represents change from my younger days and now. It expresses this through emotion, facial expressions and color. In my piece I use many hues that I feel express my change and emotion, such as cool vs warm colors as cool colors are expressed as sad, confusion, negative, while warm colors are the opposite . “Observer,” holds a simple shape and line but packs lots of meaning with the use of setting, placement and expression as in Kirchner's pieces. Over all these pieces show strong use of color, simple shape and line in which falls back to my theme and inspiration.
My experiences contributed to my ideas to then create my artistic style. A good example of this would be my piece titled, “Peaceful,” where the setting takes place downtown in Milwaukee. It is a depiction of how I view the area in which I would go out to exercise, taking a jog. The variety of color added to this piece in a sense brings out its peaceful and relaxing beauty, this is why I used cool colors such as a variety of blues and purples. Blue represents a calm, chilling color as purple represents highly valuable which the view to me is. When I create my work I like to sit down for a couple of minutes with pen and paper and just reflect on experiences, views, culture etc. When I get an idea of something I write it down, to later construct and see how I can put influence from my inspiration into my works. When creating my works I always have to bring a heavy variety of color to my pieces unless I create a print in which therefore more meaning goes into those pieces. Lastly the challenge for me is to pick my idea and see how I can incorporate color to it, while still keeping the central idea, centered.
