Title: Home in 2019
Size: 25cm x 27cm Medium: Illustration Date: 3/3/2019 |
"Home in 2019," the title of my piece is based on my
two inspiration "Interieur," by Kirchner Ernst Ludwig and "Alpine Kitchen," also by Kirchner Ernst Ludwig. My artwork represents how I view family interactions in 2019. The setting is in a living room in which there is only one person focused on one thing technology, the person is playing a video game. The one person represents disconnection with the rest of the family in which there is none, that is how the person views it. The sense of and how it is so important, technology has created that disconnection with in family in 2019. |
Inspiration

There are two inspirations that I used, in which influenced me to create my piece, "Home in 2019," The two inspirations were, "Interieur," by Kirchner Ernst Ludwig and "Alpine Kitchen," also by Kirchner Ernst Ludwig. The formal elements from these artworks that influenced my work were: the strong use of color, organic line and shape, tone, and balance how it is used to contrast the color.
My first inspiration that influenced my work was, "Interieur," by Kirchner Ernst Ludwig. I decided to use this piece as one of my inspirations for two main reasons. The first reason is because "Interieur," is a expressionist painting, meaning it holds meaning, it expresses something the artiest believes in his or her opinion. I wanted to to do something similar, I wanted to express how social media or technology has taken a toll on households in a negative way. Most family's now of day don't interact with each other as mush, its like they're there but not, due to them being on social media or on some type of technology. The second reason in why I chose this piece to be my inspiration is because of the strong formal elements it holds. Formal elements that strongly influenced my work from "Interieur," were use of color and organic line and shape, how they work together to create something very expressionist. The second inspiration that influenced my work was, "Alpine Kitchen," also by Kirchner Ernst Ludwig. Here I mainly looked at how Kirchner really emphasized the use of color repetition. This style really influenced my work I did a similar thing. I emphasized the use of color repetition in my work with different colors mainly orange and yellow. I also was attracted with how he used organic lines and shapes in this painting. I contributed a lot of organic line and shape due to the influence of "Alpine Kitchen." |
Planning Sketches
Here are four planning sketches that I made to get different ideas on how I am going to go about creating my piece,"Home in 2019." Within these drawing there are sketches there are different settings in which I thought my piece would best fit in. The settings in which my planning sketches take place in are at my house, one in my kitchen and the other in my living room.
Here is a drawing of how I first viewed on how the couches in my piece would be filled with. Family members together but not really together as technology has separated them from one other. This is many households in 2019.
|
This is a drawing of my living room in which it is empty and there is only one person there. The emptiness and there only being one person there represents a sense on how I view households in 2019. People there or not there it is the same action. Technology has broken up family interaction now days everyone is using some type of technology in which separates them from one other.
|
In this sketch there is a drawing that takes place in my kitchen in which there happens to be know one. This initially was going to be a family dinner in which the family is separated by once again technology.

Process
Here I wanted to focus in on the figure in which I made. I first drew it out with pencil and then erased the outline, still to see the faded outline. After doing that I then started to color in the figure with black, mid pressure. After that I then followed it up with integrating a little blue to it the black to give the blend as the figure in my inspiration, "Interieur," by Kirchner Ernst Ludwig. The face is made from light green and yellow blended together by white, with a black top.

Critique
In my piece,"Home in 2019," there are many similarities and differences towards my two inspirations, "Interieur," by Kirchner Ernst Ludwig and "Alpine Kitchen," also by Kirchner Ernst Ludwig. A similarity between my piece and ,"Interieur," by Kirchner Ernst Ludwig would be that both artworks have a very similar setting in were the painting takes place. My artwork takes place in my living room house. "Interieur," by Kirchner Ernst Ludwig seems to take in a living room house. Another similarity would be that both artworks use a variety or color to express the atmosphere. Strongly with the use of orange. A difference between both artworks have different meanings my has a more negative meaning on family in a household and "Interieur," seems to have a positive meaning in a household. There were also many similarities and differences between my piece and my other inspiration, "Alpine Kitchen," by Kirchner Ernst Ludwig. A similarity between my piece and "Alpine Kitchen," would be that both have similar use of organic line and shape throughout the whole artwork. Another similarity would be that both artworks have repetition of the same colors. Mines have orange, yellow, and white. For "Alpine Kitchen," It mainly uses yellow, orange, and red. A difference would be the meaning they hold. My piece represents a negative meaning on family in a household. "Alpine Kitchen," seems to hold no meaning its just a painting of a kitchen.

Experimentation
In my experiments throughout creating this piece, I experimented with different setting in which I would have my final piece take place. I also have experimented with different colors.
In here I experimented with a similar setting as my inspiration "Interieur," by Kirchner Ernst Ludwig. This is a drawing of my living room in which only one person is in the image. The one person in the image represents a sense on how I view households in 2019. People there or not there it is the same action. Technology has broken up family interaction now days everyone is using some type of technology in which separates them from one other.
|
Here I experimented with different combinations of color mainly the use of orange. I also had combinations of: blue-green, blue-purple and grey-white.
|
In this sketch I also experimented with setting of were I would put my ideas on to. This is a drawing that takes place in my kitchen in which there happens to be know one. This initially was going to be a family dinner in which the family is separated by once again technology.

Reflection

- Lastly I learned that when illustrating something, it is a really long and steady process in which you have to go through. You first have to sketch it out, then draw it onto the board and then color it. I learned patience and concentration when creating this piece.
