Title: Peaceful
Size: 25cm x 27cm Medium: Illustration Date: 3/3/2019 |
"Peaceful," the title of my piece is based on my two inspirations, "View of Basel and the Rhine," by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and "Davos in Summer," also by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. My artwork represents a positive atmosphere in which I get when cursing through my hometown. In were you can go out and take a walk or jog and just admire the view of the city and river as the wind hits your face. Both of my inspirations are beautiful places in which Kirchner went to admire and then paint about.

Inspirations
View of Basel and the Rhine by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
Kirchner, Ernst Ludwig. “View of Basel and the Rhine, 1927 - 1928 - Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.” Www.wikiart.org, 1 Jan. 1970, www.wikiart.org/en/ernst-ludwig-kirchner/view-of-basel-and-the-rhine-1928. Davos in Summer by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

There are two inspirations that I used, in which influenced me to create my piece, "Peaceful." The two inspirations were, "View of Basel and the Rhine," by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and "Davos in Summer," also by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Formal elements from these inspirations that influenced my piece were: line, tone, shape, scale, color and emphasis. My first inspiration that influenced my work was,"View of Basel and the Rhine," by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. I chose this artwork because it really went with the atmosphere I was going for. The atmosphere that I was going for was a positive, peaceful place or atmosphere. This artwork really had that and it showed it through, line, tone, shape, scale, color and emphasis. ,"View of Basel and the Rhine," was a painting created by German expressions painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in 1927-1928 and it is a oil on canvas painting. The emphasis of color of this painting had a strong impact to my piece as it had warm to cool colors which contrasts with each other balancing each other out to make a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere. "View of Basel and the Rhine," overall had a big influence in developing, "Peaceful," my work. The second inspiration that influenced my work was "Davos in Summer," also by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner."Davos in Summer," is a oil on a canvas painting created in 1925. This painting and "View of Basel and the Rhine," had very similar aspects to each other which is why I picked these two to be my inspiration. What I took from "Davos in Summer," was the formal elements line, tone, shape, scale, color and emphasis. The tone was a peaceful, calm atmosphere to it which influenced my piece. Line and shape also played a big role as inspiration as "Davos in Summer," has some organic but mostly geometrical line and shape to it. Overall, "Davos in Summer," influenced most strongly the formal elements of tone, line and shape. |
Planning Sketches
Here are four planning sketches that I made to get different ideas on how I am going to go about creating my piece, "Peaceful Jog." Within these drawing there are sketches of pattern that will be going in to my Piece. I have a wave or water pattern that I will be using to form and simulate moving water. Also I have experimented with different cloud forms to get an idea on how they will look when I integrate them in to my piece. Lastly I have sketched out a full on image on how my piece will look when I complete it.
The first sketch is a drawing of on of the different cloud forms I experimented with. This cloud form represents sun rise, were the circle is the sun falling and clouds following it. When creating my piece I was thinking what day time will it take place in so this is what drew me to drawing different cloud patterns.

Here is the pattern I will be using to simulate moving water in the river. This pattern is connected to look like some what diamond figures. But this pattern servers a purpose. When each diamond figure is connected this is what simulates a moving action and in this case moving water.
|
Here are two other cloud forms that I drew. The top one is a cloud form that represents a sense of night time. The bottom one represents regular clouds moving throughout the day time. The bottom drawing is the one I decided to move forwarded with because after debating on which one I wanted to use, I was looking for a peaceful time of day and this cloud form represents that best.
|
Lastly here is a simple sketch of how everything would look when I put everything together. This is just a simple sketch I will be adding patterns to the buildings, pattern to the river, and people. Here is a sketch of E kilbourn ave Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I wanted a locate that I can relate with.

Process
After drawing the the fences of the bridge I then started to draw the background of my image. I first used a ruler to create a line and after crating the diagonal line, I build on to it and added more lines to simulate a wall were building are located at. All of the lines in my piece are so far geometric as they are made from assistant from a ruler. |
After making the base foundation of my piece from geometric lines I then could started to add detail to my buildings, water, bridge and other objects in my piece. I used proportional in creating my piece. I made the buildings up close look much bigger and the back look smaller. When adding detail to my objects I used the example picture to get as close as possible to the drawing the images. Here are all of the color pencils that I used to create my artwork. They are yellow, black, green, light green, purple, brown, blue, sea blue and orange. I also mixed colors to create rather more light of dark hues. |
After creating the images I could now start to add color to my drawing. This is were the influence of my inspirations really started to kick in, "View of Basel and the Rhine," by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and "Davos in Summer," also by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. I used cool and warm colors in my piece. I used blue to blending blue and purple to create a mix or blue and purple color on a building. Also I used orange a warmer color next to a cool color to contrast with each other.
|
Here is a close up of how I blended in my colors to each other. The four buildings are different colors, green, brown, yellow and dark violet. This colors contrast with each other which is why I choose to use them. I blended in the colors with white to get the colors to blended in more so that less of the white background shows. I used black or darker colors for the windows so that the color of the buildings pop out more. |
For the sky and clouds I used three different colors for the sky and two different colors for the clouds. When creating the the sky I first laid a color base of blue, after that I followed it up with black but very little black as black is a strong dark color. After blending those two colors in I then lastly blended them in with white to get the smear more natural blend. For the clouds I used blue but very light coloring of it. I did this so that the clouds look more realistic and then followed it up with the white to once again get the natural blend. |
Here I wanted to get a closer and over all look on how I created the wavy moving water flow of the river. I first had to draw the diamond pattern I was going to use. After that I went over the pattern with black but only tracing the things in pencil. after that I colored in each diamond with blue, coloring in with only mid pressure. I then followed it up with coloring in each diamond with white to blend them in. That is how it was created. |
Here is a close up of how I made and colored the figure in my piece. I first drew it out with pencil and then erased the outline, still to see the faded outline. After doing that I then started to color in the figure with black, mid pressure. After that I then followed it up with integrating a little blue to it the black to give the blend as the figure in my inspiration, ,"View of Basel and the Rhine." The face is made from light green and yellow blended together by white. |
Critique
In my piece,"Peaceful," there are many similarities and differences towards my two inspirations,"View of Basel and the Rhine," by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and "Davos in Summer," also by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. A similarity between my piece and,"View of Basel and the Rhine," by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner would be that both artworks have a very similar setting in were the painting takes place. My painting takes place at a bridge in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and,"View of Basel and the Rhine," takes place in a bridge in Basel, City in Switzerland. Another similarity would be that both artworks use a variety or color to express the atmosphere. A difference between both artworks would be that my work has brighter color to is more bright, cool and warn colors. "View of Basel and the Rhine," hues have a more dark sense of cool and warm hues. There were also many similarities and differences between my piece and my other inspiration,"Davos in Summer," by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. A similarity between my piece and ,"Davos in Summer," would be that both works have very similar color to them. In "Davos in Summer," as in mine, have very similar of the cool and warm colors. Another similarity would be that both artworks have similar line, mostly geometrical line. Mine and also "Davos in Summer," use geometrical line in the buildings and organic line in the clouds and clouds. A difference would be the meaning they hold. My piece represents a positive, relaxing place in which Milwaukee, Wisconsin is."Davos in Summer," is a presentation of Davos, a town in Switzerland during summer.

Experimentation
In my experiments throughout creating this piece, I experimented with different patterns on creating texture and experimented with line. I also experimented with color. I experimented with wave or water movement patterns so simulate movement. I experimented with different cloud designs.
Here I have two different clouds designs. The top cloud design represents a sense of night time, how clouds usually look at night. The bottom design represents regular clouds moving throughout the day time. The bottom drawing is the one I decided to move forwarded with because after debating on which one I wanted to use, I was looking for a peaceful time of day and this cloud form represents that best. A nice time to have a run.

Here is the pattern of the moving water I will be using as a simulation of moving water. This pattern is connected to look like some what diamond figures. But this pattern servers a purpose. When each diamond figure is connected this is what simulates a moving action and in this case moving water.
|
Here I experimented with color and blending. After each blend with two different color I end with blending white to every color. Here I blended blue and black. After blending those colors I ended with using white to smear the two colors together.

Reflection
When creating my piece called, "Peaceful" I learned many new things like new pattern techniques to simulate movement. I also learned a new blending technique to better blend two or more colors together. The technique I learned to simulate movement but in this case movement of water, was a technique I got from observing my inspiration, "View of Basel and the Rhine," by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. In the background of the painting it has a moving river and to simulate a moving river he use a sort of diamond pattern to simulate this, so I tried it and it turned out looking good. I tried new cloud patterns or designs. I learned that there are specific cloud designs to represent the day of time. Lastly I learned that adding white to every blend of colors you blend really bond those colors together.
