Title: Reagan Flag
Size: 22.86cm x 30.48cm Medium: Colored Pencil on Paper Date: 4/11/19 |
The creation of my design of the Reagan flag was inspired by my inspirations, the MPS logo, IB logo and the Reagan logo. The flag is a design on what the Reagan flag can look like. The Flag represents, MPS, IB and Reagan. It also represents unity and diversity with in MPS, IB and Reagan. Unity and diversity is shown by the symbols holding the Husky paw in the middle of the flag. The flag holds the colors of all three, MPS, IB and Reagan.

Inspirations
When creating my flag I was influenced greatly by three logo inspirations, they were the MPS, IB and Reagan logos. What influenced my work was the formal element of color, for each logo. What also influenced my work was the meaning and the mission statements for each of the logos, they helped me come up with ideas on how to represent all components in one flag. The MPS logo influenced my work with its color, yellow, white and blue, but also the mission statements it hold. "Milwaukee Public Schools is a diverse district that welcomes all students, preparing them for success in higher education, post-educational opportunities, work, and citizenship." What stood out from the mission statement that I incorporated in my piece was the concept of unity, with that I made symbols to represent unity. The IB logo also influenced my work with the hues, white and blue. the mission statement also helped me put out ideas. "The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect." What stood out from this mission statement was the phrase "intercultural understanding and respect." So with that I thought of diversity so I created a symbol to represent diversity. The husky logo inspired color also in my flag a darker blue. The husky mascot also inspired my piece. Although I didn't use the husky I decided to have something else represent the husky, which would be the husky paw. |

Sketches/Experiments
Here are the may sketches and experimentation's of different flag ideas that I came up with. All of them represent, MPS, IB and Reagan but in a different manner. The images on the left side are two final flag options that I had to pick from, in which one would be my final flag design. The 15 flags on the right are all of my flag design options that I created in the beginning.
Final two flag options that I had to choose from. I shorten down to two options from my originally 15 options.

Research/Ideas
Process
|
The first step was to lay out my drawing paper. Next I used a rule to measure out the demotions that my flag would be. With a pencil I drew out a equal square in the center of my paper. I next continued to do my final detentions. After finishing all of my demotions I could start drawing the figures that will represent my school. What I did to create my figures was to use that square that I drew in the center of the paper and just erase the edges of the square and draw the curves of my figure. After doing that I moved on to create that heads of my figures and for that I used the tip of a regular marker. Next step was to create the husky paw of my flag. I first drew the palm of the paw and then moved on to draw the toes of the paw. After that I was finished with the drawing part and moved on to coloring in my flag. I started with coloring the end sides of the flag. The left side ends I colored blue and the right end I colored yellow. I had to push down with pressure to get that nice filled in color. Next I started to fill in the figure with color. For that I alternated from blue to yellow, blue to yellow and etc. I did the same with I heads. Next I started to color in the husky paw. On the out side I used a lighter blue. For the inside of the paw I used a darker blue. After finishing coloring in my flag I moved on to cut the detentions of the presentation board it was go be place on. The first step for cutting the presentation board was to lay out a cutting board and place the presentation board on top of it. Next was to draw on the demotions of the board. Then with an xacto knife and rule,I could then start to cut out the unwanted pieces. The rule was to keep the knife straight. After the presentation board is cut I was ready to glue on my flag to the board. The first step was to place a large paper inside the vent. Then I placed my flag upside down to add the spry glue. I sprayed the glue onto my flag from left to right. After spraying my flag I gently picked it up and placed it onto the presentation board. Lastly I gently flattened down the flag to secure it on the board. |
Critique
There were many similarity's and differences between all of my inspiration. This would include similarity's in color but differences in design.
A similarity between the husky logo and my Reagan flag would be the color and a similar representation of Reagan. The Husky represents Reagan and the paw in my flag along with the colors, this represents Reagan. The husky and paw have the similar meaning but portray it in a different way.
|
A similarity between my flag and the MPS logo would be the color they hold, they hold the same color of blue and yellow, a difference would be that my flags represents unity and diversity, through images. All though MPS mission statement is all about diversity and unity it doesn't show it thought the MPS logo.
|
A similarity between my flag and the IB logo would be the color they hold, they both hold white and blue. A difference would be similar to the MPS logo it doesn't really show diversity and unity through the logo as in the mission statement.

Reflection
The process of creating the flag was a fun and new experience in which I learned how to use new materials and also learned new things. Creating a flag for my school was a honer to do as I tried to incorporate to the best of my ability a representation of MPS, IB and Reagan. With in the process I learned to work with a presentation board and how to properly set and cut it. I also worked with spray glue and that was a new experience. Over all the creation of my flag went well, I believe it hit most of the components of the mission statements from each logo, MPS, IB and Reagan. What I would improve on my flag would be the husky paw, it was fairly simple and if I were to redo it I would of made the paw more realistic.
