Title: Vacation Setting
Size: 25in by 35in Medium: Illustration Date: 12/02/2019 |
"Vacation Setting" is the title of my piece which was influenced by two different artworks by the same artist, my first inspiration was "Street, Berlin" and my second inspiration was "Berlin Street Scene," both created by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. My piece represents the setting of the photo in which I depicted, were the two figures in the center and the building or castle in the background are the main depictions. Color, shape and line were influenced by my inspirations. Color was influenced by the use of dark hues used in the background images to highlight the background building and two central figures in the center of the piece.

Inspirations
Street, Berlin by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
Kirchner, Ernst Ludwig. “Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Street, Berlin. 1913: MoMA.” The Museum of Modern Art, https://www.moma.org/collection/works/79354. Berlin Street scene by Kirchner

There are two artworks that inspired and influenced my work, both inspirations were from one artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, my first inspiration was "Street, Berlin" and my second inspiration was "Berlin Street Scene," both of these artworks were from a art series that Kirchner created. Components that influenced my piece were formal elements of color, line, shape, and scale. Function and purpose as influenced my piece, mainly the expressionism part were Kirchner expresses his feelings and emotion of the setting of the streets of Berlin.
My first inspiration that influenced my work was "Street, Berlin" by Kirchner. I chose this artwork because it went with the theme and atmosphere I was going for, which was expressionism within the streets and public. Kirchner's piece "Street, Berlin" depicts the streets of Berlin were he uses formal elements of line, shape, color and scale, which I incorporated in my piece. Kirchner uses color in this piece in a way were there is a central figure he is trying to highlight, for example the lady, everything else has darker similar colors which the lady has a different color making it pop out more. In my piece I tried to do the same making the background image and the two figures in the center of the piece pop out more using scale, line, shape and color making it the central focus. "Berlin Street Scene" being my second influence for my piece. "Berlin Street Scene" having a similar vibe to my first inspiration of the formal elements of scale, line, shape, and color. "Berlin Street Scene" does a little better job of using color and scale to highlight a certain figure. Once looking at the piece my eyes were drawn to the brighter color which in this case it was the lady in the orange, red jacket. In my piece I used this concept of using brighter colors to highlight a certain object or figure. Over all both of my inspirations share similar concepts and objectives, in which I used to incorporate in my piece. |
Planning Sketches/Experimentation
For experimentation I used many colors to create my piece, here on the left are the color pencils that I used to create my artwork. They are yellow, black, green, light green, purple, brown, blue, sea blue, sky blue and orange. I also mixed colors to create rather more light of dark hues especially in the shades of blue. Also I experimented with different shades of color by mixing different hues together. For example mixing light and dark colors like blue and black.

Here the image that I used to copy my image onto the board. This is a grided out image that has the same amount of squares that my board has. Mainly for planing I used the grid technique to set up the image to draw it on to the board.

Process
The first step was to lay out the blank illustration board in which I used to create my artwork on. After laying it out I would use the grid method to add my image and copy it on to my board.
The first thing I began to copy was the background for the image, which was the sky and the Disney castle so started with the Disney castle and the sky build it self. Next I moved on to draw the two main figures of the piece in the center of the board. With this I began a drew the to central images. Next I moved on to draw the rest of the images that were on the bored from left to right. When drawing the images or figures I use the grid to help me accuracy draw the figures. Next after drawing all of the images or figures, I moved to color in the piece. Firstly I began once again to start with the two figures in the center of the piece, for the figure on the left side I used bright cool colors of two different shades of blue. The top was a more light sky blue as the bottom was more of a darker ocean blue. Next I worked to color in the figure on the right and for this I used orange, green and blue. The upper top I used a darker green with a bright orange color to balance out each other, then I used a blue with some black added to it so that it is not to bright. I used brighter colors for these two images because they as well as the castle are the main objects of the piece. Next I worked from left `to right this time to color in the rest of the figures as it was easier to color them in that order. For the rest of the images of people or figures I used darker colors to them in order to highlight the background and the two central images, in order to do this I added black to almost every figure and with white I blended the black and the other color used to create that darker sense of color. After finishing to color all of the images I then moved on to the background castle image and for color I used different shades of blue like sky blue, ocean blue and a regular blue. I colored in the image from left to right with adding more pressure at the bottom of the image and a lighter pressure at the top. Lastly was to color in the sky which would be colored in with a light grey, blue and white to finish it off. I first started with the grey that was one layer then moved to using a blue shade only very little blue was added, that was the second layer and lastly I topped it with white bringing the two, grey and blue together. |

Critique
There were many similarities and differences between "Berlin Street Scene," and my piece. A similarity between both pieces would be the use of the formal elements of color, shape and line. Kirchner uses darker colors for most of figures except for one and that is the lady in the orange, red jacket. In doing this he highlights this figure making it the center of the piece. For my piece I tried to do the same by using darker colors for the figures in the background. I did this so that the two central figures in the center pop out same goes with the background building. A difference between both works would be point of view. Kirchner uses a more movement image to work off, the people in the painting look as if they were moving though the streets a difference in the use of movement. For my piece there is little to no movement, the figures seem to show no movement as I chose a setting were people were still.

'Street Berlin," and my piece also have many similarities and differences. A similarity between both pieces would be similar to the similarity between "Berlin Street Scene," the use of color how Kirchner uses color to highlight certain figures by having the objects around that figure have a darker more cool colors and having the figure in a different color from the rest. A difference would be once again point of view, "Street Berlin," has a moving aspect to it compared to my piece were there is little to no movement. The figures in my piece are either standing still or sitting compared to "Street Berlin," Were the figures seem to be moving forward.

Reflection
When creating my piece I learned many new things, like new pattern techniques and color patterns to highlight and create setting.
I also learned a new blending technique to better blend two or more colors together, that technique was white using a simple color as of white after every blend of two or more colors really helps finalize and really bond those colors together. In the background of my piece for the large image building and sky, for the building I blended different kinds of blue to it and for the sky I blended the color grey in a new technique. I tried new patterns or designs for the sky, I learned that there are specific sky designs to represent the day of time. Lastly if I were to redo or change a component of my artwork I would use more darker or cooler colors like, darker blue, grey, black, and purple for the background figures to make the background of the building and two main figures in the center to pop out more.
