Title: Representation of Community 2
Size: 36in x 36in Medium: Mix Median (Digital manipulation & Screen print) Date: 10/26/18 |
"Representation of Community 2" the title of my second piece, is based on my inspirations, Tuttomondo by Keith haring and The Dance of Youth by Pablo Picasso. Representation of Community 2, has the same two concepts as my two inspirations, community and unity, but shows it in a different way. Representation of Community 2 focuses on a more broad, larger community of mine, a community that I am not to use to.

Artistic Inspirations
There are two different inspirations that inspired me to create my community based artwork. This includes my stencils and background. The first inspiration that inspired me to create my artwork, was a large mural painting, Tuttomondo, done on a side of a church located in Pisa, Italy. The large mural was created by Keith Haring, in 1989. The second artwork that inspired me to create my community based artwork was, The Dance of Youth by Pablo Picasso, created in 1961. The large mural, Tuttomondo, by Keith Haring, was an inspiration that I chose to base my artwork on because it represents unity within a community, which I was looking for when creating my piece. In his piece he uses different human like figures put in different positions and various colors , to represent unity within a community. I did something similar, I used different building instead of human figures, located in my community that I grew up going to and I also used various colors for my stencils. My background for my artwork was the colors of the Milwaukee flag, this represents community within my city. These were similar aspects that I took from this inspiration. The Dance of Youth by Pablo Picasso, what I took from this inspiration was the figures united as one to represent unity and community. This was the inspiration that inspired me to use hands to represent unity. For my background, I did a similar depiction as The Dance of Youth by Pablo Picasso, I used hands and put them in positions to form a circle and inside that circle is were my stencils will go. The Dance of Youth, forms a circle by people holding hands and in the middle there is a figure surrounded by all of those people holding hands. Using both of these inspirations combined I crated two pieces of art that represent Community. |

Planning Drawings
Here are the sketches of my backgrounds with the stencils added. This is a basic depiction of how the final pieces of both of the art works will look like. I wanted to do a more personal community piece and a more broad community piece.
|
Here are the backgrounds that I chose from to use for both of my community artworks. Both background sketches are similar but have their differences.

Stencil Sketches
These are some of my stencil sketches that I used in my community art works. These sketches are building in my city, Milwaukee, I decided to do buildings as my stencils because these buildings represent community to me.
Process For Creating Background
I will be creating my background through Photoshop and using the same background for both of my pieces. The first step that I had to take in creating my background for my community project was to take pictures and upload them to Photoshop. Pictures that I took were pictures of four different hands put in certain positions, the hands will represent unity. After uploading them I used the magic wand tool to cut out each hand. After cutting each hand out from the original photo I adjusted each hand to their right position and then used the free transform mode to enlarge each hand to an appropriate size. You can see two examples on the left of how I used the magic wand tool to cut out each hand, then paste them to the background. The next step was to to add a background color for each hand. The first step for this was to pick out the colors, the colors that I used were the colors from the Milwaukee flag: yellow, blue, white and light sky blue, but when creating the colors I tweaked them a little bit, by making the colors bright so that when the stencils go on top of the colors they are visible and don't turn out looking poorly. After creating the four colors I then transferred the merged colors to my background with the hands and then placed them, creating small squares, four of them. After that final step the background was complete. |
Background 1 & 2
This is the background that I decided to use for both of my community based art works. This background is inspired by both the large mural painting, Tuttomondo, done on a side of a church located in Pisa, Italy, created by Keith Haring, in 1989 and The Dance of Youth, by Pablo Picasso. The background colors are not random but specific. They are the colors of the Milwaukee flag, my city flag. The hands in the background represent unity, each hand is a different hand. I wanted to have diversity, because in a community the is usual a good amount of diversity. In conclusion the main theme of this background is unity in a community.

Process For creating Stencils
|
Step 2After step one is complete, step two includes cutting out the drawing, creating the stencil. I had to cut out every little individual shape. After cutting every little individual shape out, the stencil was ready to print on.
|
The stencils that I used for my first art work were local buildings that are located around my neighborhood, but also these buildings represent my community. All of these building that I am using for my first piece, I grew up going to.
|
The stencils that I used for the second art work were more broad buildings that are located in downtown. For the second artwork I wanted to use buildings that I've only been to a couple of times in my life. I did this to represent a more broad community not just a local.
|
Process for printing the stencils on to the Background.
|
The first step was to tape the stencil to the print screen, so it does not move around when we print. Then we placed the screen with the stencil on to the our background. The next step was to add paint on top of the stencil with a spoon and use the spoon to smear the paint so it makes sort of a line. After that we used a squeegee screen printer, and vertically went up and then down to smear the paint through the screen. I did this for about 6 to 7 repetitions for each stencil to really get the paint on the background. After that we slowly removed the screen from our background and we had a print. Before adding a new print we had to do two things the first one being, washing the screen with water and a sponge each time and secondly wait for the print all ready add to dry. I did this for about 10 times because I had 10 stencils. |
Critique
In Representation of Community 1 and 2 there were many similarities and differences towards my inspirations and also similarities and differences between the two pieces them selves. A similarity between Representation of Community 1, 2 and my inspirations would be that both art pieces and my inspiration represent community and unity. Another similarity between both art pieces and my inspiration is that in the both pieces and in the inspirations both use figures and color to represent a sense of unity within a community. Both inspirations use human figures to represent community and various colors. Both of my art works use buildings and various colors to represent community. A difference between Representation of Community 1, 2 and my inspirations would be that the inspirations use human figures and in Representation of Community 1, 2 both use buildings to show community. Lastly a difference between Representation of Community 1, 2 would be Representation of Community 1 focuses more on a more personal community of mine, a community that I am familiar with on a day to day bases, which on the other hand Representation of Community 2 focuses more on a more broad community of mine, one that I am not to familiar with. They both show this through the stencils, the stencils a buildings in Milwaukee, my city.
Here are my two art works side by side. The one on the left is Representation of Community 1 and the one on the right is Representation of Community 2. We can see that they are very similar to each other but have differences within the stencils.

Experimentations
I experimented with some things when creating my background for my community art work. At first I was going to use the exact colors of the Milwaukee flag but when I did add those colors the background it looked to dark. The stencils were not going to be as visible. What I did to change that was brighten up the colors, for example instead of using to original mustard yellow, I changed it to a more bright lemon color. Another thing that I experimented with was the hand placement. I was originally going to have lots of hands all over the background to represent community, but I didn't like that idea any more so instead I decided to place four hands in positions to form a circle. This represents unity in a community.
Reflection
Creating Representation of Community 1 and 2 was a long process, but through that process I learned a good amount of things, and most importantly had fun. I learned how to screen print, that process was a little stressful but I enjoyed everything about it. Another thing that I learned was how to make stencils. There was may successes and failures when creating my stencils, at first I messed up a lot but pushed and learned through those mistakes, and at the end I created stencils that I am proud of. If I were to go back and recreate this project again I would of done less stencils because I had 10. Since I had so much I had to do more work which really stressed me out but I overcame that. Overall I really enjoyed creating this project.
Act Questions
1)Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
I was inspired by two different artist with different art medians, the first one being a painting my Pablo Picasso, The Dance of Youth and the second one being a mural ,Tuttomondo by Keith haring. What I took from The Dance of Youth was the figures holding hands creating a circle to show community and unity. I did something similar I used hands put in different positions forming a circle to represent community and unity. Secondly what I took from Tuttomondo a mural by Keith haring was the all the figures and various colors in the mural which he used to represent community. I did my own thing and used buildings in Milwaukee and also various color for my stencils which represent community.
2)What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The over all approach for, Tuttomondo by Keith haring and The Dance of Youth by Pablo Picasso was to represent community and unity. They did this through the various colors and figures within the two pieces .
