Title: Growth
Size: 36in x 24in Medium: Acrylic Paint on Canvas Date: 4/22/19 |
"Growth," the title of my piece was inspired by three different artworks that were created all by Henri Matisse. "Blue Nude II," "The Creole Dancer," and "Sorrow Of The King," all by Henri Matisse. My piece represents growth my growth. The colors hold meaning, yellow representing my future, green success and red my failures, all we go through in life. The formal elements in my piece such as line, color, shape and repetition were influenced by my three inspirations.

There are three inspirations that helped influence my piece, all three by the same artist. "Blue Nude II," "The Creole Dancer," and "Sorrow Of The King," all by Henri Matisse. Some of the influences or components that I took from my inspiration would be formal elements such as, color, line, shape, tone, emphasis, repetition and more. "Blue Nude II," by Henri Matisse has influenced my work with the formal elements of line, shape, scale, and color. With simple free flowing line, this created organic, curvaceous shape. This has influenced my piece to do a similar thing. In my piece I created three figures with the same formal elements as in "Blue Nude II," simple line and shape, holding the same hue as the strong dark blue. The scale in my piece increased within each canvas. "The Creole Dancer," by Henri Matisse has influenced my piece with the formal elements such as, line, shape and color. The emphasis of this influence would be emphasized on the background of my piece. "The Creole Dancer," having a mix of organic and geometric lines, this creates organic and geometric shapes. Similar to mine I took this and created the background of my piece, with geometric and organic line. "Sorrow Of The King," by Henri Matisse has influenced my piece with similar formal elements of line, shape and color but this piece also holds repetition. with the brush strokes in my piece are repeated all over the piece just in different colors. This is similar to "Sorrow Of The King," as it holds repetition in the yellow marks and color. Overall each inspiration had there own little uniqueness that I took and incorporated in my piece to create Growth the title of my piece. Also the use of color variety was greatly used in these paintings which also influenced my work |
Planning Sketches/Experimentation
when creating my final piece here were two planning sketches and my experimentations that helped me get an idea of how I would go about creating my piece.
The first planning sketch is a depiction of how I plan on describing the theme of my piece, which is growth, how I grew up and obstacles I had to face also achievements I accomplished and further success I would accomplish.
|
Here is my second sketch I made to get an idea on how I will go about creating my final piece. Very similar to my first sketch, it represents growth, how I grew as a person over my life and keep growing. As we can see there is a climbing stage and a decline stage.
|
Here are is my experimentation. I experimented with color, and brush strokes. In this case I experimented with a red brush stroke on a light background, that way the red is visible.
|
Here I experimented with red and yellow on a green background. as we can see the red is visible, although the yellow is viable, it is not any more visible then the red.

Process
|
The first stage in creating my tryptic was to create the canvases. There were three total canvases all 12in by 24in. I first had to attach the stretcher bars to each other and then staple each of the corners together. I did this 3 times to create the three canvases. Next was to add the canvas to each set of stretcher bar frame. I roled out the canvas cutting three sets of 18in by 30in canvas for each frame. Next was to add the canvases to each frame. For this I used, the staple gun and force. I first stapled three staples to one side and then tightened the canvas to then staple the opposite side to it.. Next was to do the same but on the other two sides of the canvas. I repeated this two more times. The next step was to cut the excesses canvas I was not going to use, so I did with the scissors. After cutting the excesses cloth I was left with a bit of canvas in the corners of the stretcher, so what I did was grouped the excesses bunch of canvas with my hand, put four staples into to lower part of it to secure it and then cut the excesses bit of canvas straight off. I did this for all three canvases. lastly I add the renaming staples to the back of the canvas to secure it for good. I then cleaned off the little string bits of canvas that was left behind, then I was ready to add the gesso. The next step was to gesso the canvas so for that all I needed was the gesso, a brush and a cup to put the gesso in. I set my canvas onto a stand, to secure my canvas while I put gesso onto it. I poured gesso into a cup, then with the brush I started to put gesso onto it from left to right. When gessoing up my canvas I made sure that I got every bit of canvas with the gesso. I let the gesso sit for a day to dry, once dried I was ready draw my images on to the canvas. After drawing my images onto each canvas I was ready to began drawing. I started with painting with the dark blue in which used to paint the figures in each of the canvases. I first used a thick, about a inch and a half brush, to spread the paint all over. Then with a smaller thinner brush I went over the corners and out sides to get a clean finish to the figures. After painting with the blue hue I next started to paint the background of my piece. I started with yellow and used it for the top of the first third of the background. I used a thinner brush to get a clean finish on the first third of the image. I did this for each of the canvas were it needed yellow. Next was to move on to painting the second third of the tryptic, green. Similar to adding the yellow I used a thin brush, dipped into the green paint and painted each canvas with green where it needed that hue. Next was to add the final color of the background, red. Similar to each of the added hues I used a thin brush, dipped into the red paint and painted each canvas with red where it needed that hue. The final step was to finish the background with the brush strokes that will be all over the piece. With the three different hues of, yellow, green, and red, I added brush marks of red to the yellow part of each canvas, red and yellow strokes to each part were green was located, and lastly I added yellow strokes to the red background. |

Reflection
When creating my piece, Growth, there was many challenges and struggles but I pushed through them. In the process of creating my piece, I learned many new things through my struggles and experiments. I learned how to better blend my colors and also learned how to better choose colors depending on there value of either brightness or darkness. The most challenging part of creating my piece was keeping each brush stroke even and keeping it consistence. The creation of my piece was challenging, challenging in the fact of keeping brush strokes consistence as it would not and I had to best keep it consistence. If I were to redo or improve my piece I would better choose different colors and find more effective ways to keep my strokes consistent.
