Title: Through The Window
Size: 24in x 36in Medium: Digital Collage Date: 9/26/19 |
Through The Window, the title of my piece was influenced by two artworks by Henri Matisse, "The Open Window" by Henri Matisse, and Landscape, Nice," by Henri Matisse. My piece is a digital manipulation that show through the window me looking into the distance were there is a landscape that is familiar to me as it is my park and shooting stars above. This represents me looking at a positive view were wishes or goals will come true, its how I view them.

Inspirations
The Open Window by Henri Matisse
“Open Window, Collioure.” Art Object Page, https://www.nga.gov/collection/art-object-page.106384.html “Open Window, Collioure, 1905 by Henri Matisse.” Henri Matisse, https://www.henrimatisse.org/the-open-window.jsp. Landscape, Nice, by Henri Matisse
“Landscape, Nice,1919.” Metmuseum.org, https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/483322. |
There were two main artwork inspirations that influenced my my digital collage, both by the same artist, Henri Matisse. The first artwork being ,"The Open Window" by Henri Matisse, the second one being, "Landscape, Nice," by Henri Matisse. What influenced my work was the formal elements of color, shape, line, scale and tone. "The Open Window," by Henri Matisse was the first inspiration that influenced my work. The artwork was created in Collioure, a small town on the Mediterranean coast of France to which Matisse traveled with Derain in the summer of 1905. This painting was one of the first fauvism paintings. Formal elements that I took to influence and incorporated into my work were shape, line, scale, and a similar concept of the open window. My work shows similar proportional scale through line and shape. Similar to "The Open Window" my work represents an open window that shows me looking at a landscape of a park I grew up going to and the shooting stars represent wishes or miracles. "Landscape, Nice," by Henri Matisse was my second inspiration. "Landscape, Nice," by Henri Matisse is a landscape that holds natural colors of nature. Similar to mine this inspiration influenced color, scale and tone. Color and tone were inspired as "Landscape, Nice," holds natural color portraying a nature tone. Scale was also influenced, keeping it proportional and accurate. |
Planning Sketches/Experimentation
For experimentation I experimented with different positioning and size with the images of the shooting stars and the image of me looking at the distance. I experimented with positioning the image of me on the right and left side but ended up placing the image in the center. For the shooting stars I experimented with positioning I positioned the star going in one direction and having then more on the left size.

For planning sketches I only really planned out a simple sketch just to get an idea of how I will be positioning everything. I image is identical to the final piece.

Process
Critique
"The Open Window" by Matisse is similar to my piece as it shows and holds similar formal elements of shape, line, scale, and a similar concept of the open window. My work shows similar proportional scale through line and shape. Similar to "The Open Window" my work represents an open window that shows me looking at a landscape and shooting stars.
A deference between my piece and "The Open Window" would be color, "The Open Window" holds many bright, warm colors the mean something as in my piece it holds natural color or original color. |
A similarity between Landscape, Nice, by Henri Matisse and my piece would be color and image. The color on both pieces are natural and original and also depict a landscape within the work.
A difference between both artwork would be the concept or meaning behind the pieces, Landscape, Nice, by Henri Matisse is just a painting of a landscape while in my piece, there is a landscape but it is not the main focus of the piece as a whole. |
Reflection
Creating this project was very fun and I enjoyed playing around with new and old feature to me in Photoshop. All though I had fun I did learn new skills, I learned how to edit better, warp images to what I want and learned how to alter the image size and shapes of images. At first it was confusing to navigate through Photoshop once again as I haven't used it in a while but I over came that and learned as I went again. For me by just playing around with the old and new features that Photoshop offered, I discovered a lot of different modes, which I incorporated in my digital manipulation. If I were to recreate this project again I would add unnatural color to my images such as the sky, landscape or the image of myself.
